Research conducted at Harvard Medical School and University of Pittsburgh showed that practicing mindfulness meditation helps balance brain regions that are normally either deactivated or overly activate in people who suffer from depression.
An 8-week mindfulness-based intervention was studied that used fMRI brain imaging to see possible physiological brain changes. The study showed that practicing mindfulness meditation for 8-weeks leads to significant positive brain changes (1,2)
